Nick Slade

Consulting Team

Nick has spent over 25 years working with individuals and teams in a diverse range of high-pressure, high-performance contexts. Having carved a niche in the sporting world as the first performance analyst with the England Men’ Cricket team, he then spent a decade building a professional development coaching service for Great Britain’s Olympians and Paralympians. Transitioning into the corporate world post-London 2012, he has worked as a full-time executive coach with Ovo Energy during their significant growth phase; as a Head of HR for an Executive Search firm, and as a Director of his own consultancy before joining YSC in 2018. With an initial portfolio across media and financial services, Nick now operates out of YSC’s Global Private Equity Practice, specialising in management/exec team assessment and coaching.

Nick’s reputation as a consultant, coach and colleague is one of witty informality and directness of insight. Never too far away from ironic observation or a profound and slightly uncomfortable truth, he’s the one most likely to say what others might think and move the conversation forward. Articulate, analytical and generous with time and thought, he’s coached hundreds of talented but imperfect individuals, from CEOs to World Champions, in their honest pursuit of being just that little bit better.

Nick regards qualifications as far less important than he used to. However, he completed an Executive MBA from the University of Bath in 2018, with a thesis on the psychology of executive leadership assessment. He also picked up a Chartership in HR from the CIPD along the way and has several post graduate qualifications in Organisational Development, Executive Coaching and Sport Science. He’s an AoEC accredited coach and is proficient in almost any psychometric under the sun.

When brave enough to emerge from his small but perfectly formed garden office, Nick is more than a part-time Dad to two toddlers and less than a part-time Dad to two teenagers, all boys. A fanatic about almost any sport, his heart lies between Lord’s, home of cricket, and new Plough Lane, home of AFC Wimbledon.

“I was reluctantly urged to have a coach and the only person I could think of was Nick, who’d assessed me some years before. His honesty, understanding and courage then got him the job, but it has since been surpassed by his care and friendship. We have fun but frank exchanges, he calls me out when I’m not being honest with myself or seeking short cuts, and we throw ideas around to great effect. Whilst I still struggle having a ‘coach’ the reality is that I wholly value the space to think and be challenged by someone who knows me uncomfortably well.”

“It has been so helpful. I have a complex matrix of internal stakeholders and investors to manage; and Nick helps me to think about how to prioritise and perfect my interactions. He’s very challenging but positively, he calls out the assumptions I’m holding, the habits I fall into and the excuses I make! We collaborate and share ideas, plus he brings his own knowledge of PE to help bring context and reframe my thinking. Our sessions help me focus and realign, they have made me better for sure, at work and at home.”
